    Territorial Acknowledgment

(written by the Rev. Lee Claus)

    This land is Sacred.

It has been anointed for tens of thousands of years with the dust and bones of all those who lived here before us.

As we came here, we were invited to share this land with the original people, with a common love and concern for the land that we would live upon and share, in good ways.

To honour the conditions of the Dish-With-One-Spoon Wampum Treaty, we acknowledge that such treaty agreements were not to be considered as land surrenders; but to be considered as agreements of sharing together.

We are all treaty people. May we live with respect on this land, and live in peace and friendship with its people.

Hymn #322 – All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

    Verse 1:
All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
    Let angels prostrate fall;
    bring forth the royal diadem
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
    crown him Lord of all.
    Verse 2:
Hail him, the heir of David’s line,
    whom David Lord did call,
    the God incarnate, life divine,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
    crown him Lord of all.
    Verse 3:
Crown him, you martyrs of your God,
    who from his altar call;
praise him whose burning path you trod,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
    crown him Lord of all.
    Verse 4:
Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget
    the wormwood and the gall,
go, spread your trophies at his feet,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
    crown him Lord of all.
    Verse 5:
Let every tongue and every tribe,
    delivered from the fall,
    to Christ all majesty ascribe,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
    crown him Lord of all.
    Verse 6:
O that, with heaven’s sacred throng,
we at his feet may fall,
    lift high the universal song,
and crown him, crown him, crown him,
    crown him Lord of all.

    The Gathering of the Community

Celebrant: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

    People: And also with you.

    Celebrant: Almighty God,

People: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Glory to God

    All: (sung)
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
    Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

    Collect for the Day

    Celebrant: Let us pray.

Author and Giver of all good things, graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us in all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

    People: Amen.

    Scripture Readings

    First Lesson – Jeremiah 2:4-13

    Reader: A reading from Jeremiah.

Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?’

I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.

Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children’s children. Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

    People: Thanks be to God.

    Second Lesson – Hebrews 13:1-8,15-16

    Reader: A reading from Hebrews.

Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured.

Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?’

Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

    People: Thanks be to God.

Hymn #631 – The Kingdom of God is Justice and Joy

    Verse 1:
The kingdom of God is justice and joy,
for Jesus restores what sin would destroy.
God’s power and glory in Jesus we know,
and here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow.
    Verse 2:
    The kingdom of God is mercy and grace;
the captives are freed, the sinners find place.
The outcasts are welcomed God’s banquet to share,
and hope is awakened in place of despair.
    Verse 3:
The kingdom of God is challenge and choice:
believe the good news, repent and rejoice!
His love for us sinners brought Christ to his cross,
our crisis of judgement for gain and for loss.
    Verse 4:
God’s kingdom is come, the gift and the goal,
in Jesus begun, in heaven made whole.
The heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call,
and all things cry “Glory!” to God All-in-All.

    Gospel – Luke 14:1,7-14

    (Please stand)

Gospeller: The Lord be with you.

    People: And also with you.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

    Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely.

When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’

He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’

    Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.

People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

    Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

    Homily

    The Apostles’ Creed

    (Please stand)

Celebrant: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say

People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

cremation grave markers on a lawn

As you may have heard, our cemetery will run out of new spaces for in-ground burials in the foreseeable future.  The St. Peter’s Cemetery Board is offering parishioners one more opportunity to provide suggestions as to how we could expand the capacity through means such as columbaria and/or scattering gardens.  We will meet via Zoom on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm to answer any questions you may have, and to receive any suggestions you may wish to make.  To sign up for this session, please contact Doug Bing.  You will be provided with a link by email a day or two prior to the 19th.  We thank the parish for the interest shown in our October sessions.  We hope this final one will be as useful and informative as the earlier ones were.
